WH40k Book Club Episode #34 – Ephrael Stern: The Heretic Saint

Each episode will be in a traditional book club format. We will read one mutually agreed upon book to discuss at the club meeting aka podcast. Sometimes we will read brand new books, sometimes we will read old books, but there will be a method to our madness as to why.

And now for something COMPLETELY different, Ephrael Stern: The Heretic Saint by David Annandale. We sadly know that the only way to read this book right now is have one of the 1500 collector’s editions. A hardcover/paperback will release eventually, but in true Black Library fashion, we have no idea when that will be. We do still urge everyone to not watch/listen to this week’s voxcast until after reading the book. Just bookmark this post and come back. We’ll still be here.

We dove into both the book and the 20th anniversary collection of the Ephrael Stern: Daemonifuge comic, which is available for purchase. We cannot stress enough how important it is to read the comic before the book. Annandale clearly expects the reader to know all about Stern’s past, and there is no recap. Not only that, but the comic knowledge is vital for understanding the book. It’s a good thing that the comic is pretty good, although we did have a couple of issues with it.

Overall we enjoyed our time with the Heretic Saint, but we can’t help but wonder if this is merely a launching pad into something greater. Why else would Black Library bring their No. 1 horror and monster-writer to write about a saint? The plot thickens.

Our next book is Indomitus by Gav Thorpe. We’re so excited to have newly published books to read! The LE is out of stock via Games Workshop, but the audiobook is already on Amazon, and the hardcover version will release next week!

Keri

It was all thanks to a little game called Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine that alerted Keri to the intricate world of WH40K. She's not into tabletop gaming, but she loves extended lore. After getting through just one omnibus, it was all downhill from there. She can't leave the local Citadel without $150 in books.
