WH40k Book Club Episode #176 Part 1 – Hive Part 1 by Dan Abnett

We’re back! And while we were away, we worked through Parts 1 & 2 of Dan Abnett’s monstrosity, Hive. We’ve decided to do two separate podcast episodes for this one, one for each part (the physical copy was divided into two parts), so we could give each section of 350-400 pages their proper due. To be fair, the amount of world-building in this book requires two episodes.

We are treating Part 1 of the book as if it’s a completely separate book, as though Part 2 has not released yet. Not entirely sure why the physical copy was split in two volumes, but the audiobook and eBook were not. It’s confusing. So if you did not read the physical copy, the first Part contains the first 7 chapters of the novel(s).

As such, it’s really had to discuss Part 1 as though it is a separate novel, as the plot didn’t really take form until the last third of the book. But there are plenty of characters and world-building to discuss. Next time, in just one week, we will cover Part 2 as its own novel. But if you want to get a jump on the next book in our schedule, it’s Veterans of the Fall by William Crowe. An Astra Militarum novel sounds nice right now.

The Hive Part 1 by Dan Abnett episode is on YouTube, Spotify, and Rumble. Of course you can still find the audio podcast on Apple Podcasts and virtually anywhere else you can find podcasts. If you haven’t read the book yet, better do that before you listen! If you like us, please subscribe or even leave a review!

Each episode will be in a traditional book club format. We will read one mutually agreed upon book to discuss at the club meeting aka podcast. Sometimes we will read brand new books, sometimes we will read old books, but there will be a method to our madness as to why.

Keri

It was all thanks to a little game called Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine that alerted Keri to the intricate world of WH40K. She's not into tabletop gaming, but she loves extended lore. After getting through just one omnibus, it was all downhill from there. She can't leave the local Citadel without $150 in books.
