WH40k Book Club Episode #137 – Above and Beyond by Denny Flowers

After Outgunned, neither of us were too excited to read the next book in Denny Flowers’ series, Above and Beyond. We did love the book, but we strongly disliked Lucille von Shard. We’re definitely here for more behind-the-propaganda-scenes with Kile Simlex, but is Shard still the same obnoxious alcoholic? The short answer is yes, but despite her face being on the book cover, the book is barely about her.

You know, kind of like the propaganda vids about her. Dang it, Mr. Flowers, this was genius and absolutely brilliant.

This cracked me up, so I’m using it.

Yeah, we still don’t like Lucille von Shard, but were we supposed to? Despite that, we’re looking forward to the inevitable third book. WE NEEDS IT, SIR.

Next up is our favorite Christmas/Sanguinala tradition, a new Da Red Gobbo book, Long Live Da Red Gobbo by Justin Woolley. These books are so much fun. They’re the perfect way to close out the year. It also means that like Christmas, our Annual Book Club Awards are on the horizon!

The Above and Beyond by Denny Flowers vidcast is on YouTube and now Spotify! Of course you can still find the audio podcast on Apple Podcasts and virtually anywhere else you can find podcasts. If you haven’t read the book yet, better do that before you listen! If you like us, please subscribe or even leave a review!

Each episode will be in a traditional book club format. We will read one mutually agreed upon book to discuss at the club meeting aka podcast. Sometimes we will read brand new books, sometimes we will read old books, but there will be a method to our madness as to why.

Keri

It was all thanks to a little game called Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine that alerted Keri to the intricate world of WH40K. She's not into tabletop gaming, but she loves extended lore. After getting through just one omnibus, it was all downhill from there. She can't leave the local Citadel without $150 in books.

    • It could, but it references a LOT from the first book, Outgunned. You wouldn't understand a lot of the background or a lot of the interactions between the main characters.
