WH40k Book Club 1: Dark Imperium by Guy Haley

Every month, Keri and I will be reading a new book in the WH40k universe and discussing it on our podcast. We invite you to read along with us and join in on our conversation via comments, Twitter, email, or vox cast.

This month, we’re reading Dark Imperium by Guy Haley. You can purchase it via [easyazon_link identifier=”B0719K8TS9″ locale=”US” tag=”chocoboyoga-20″]Amazon[/easyazon_link], Black Library, or Audible.

From the back of the book:

Fell times have come to the galaxy. Cadia has fallen, destroyed by the onslaught of Chaos. A Great Rift in the warp has opened and from its depths spew daemons and the horrors of Old Night. But all hope is not lost… A hero, long absent, has returned and with him comes the wrath of the Ultramarines reborn. Roboute Guilliman has arisen to lead the Imperium out of darkness on a crusade the likes of which has not been seen since the fabled days of the Emperor. But never before have the forces of Ruin amassed in such numbers, and nowhere is safe from despoliation. From the dreaded Scourge Stars come the hordes of the Plaguefather, Lord Nurgle, and their pustulent eye is fixed on Macragge. As the Indomitas Crusade draws to an end, Guilliman races to Ultramar and a confrontation with the Death Guard.

Questions to consider during and after reading:

  • Did you like the book?
  • What was your favorite part?
  • Did the author do a good job of “humanizing” Guilliman?
  • The world has changed since Guilliman was last in it. How is he adapting to this new reality?
  • How are the Ultramarines adapting to their father returned?
  • The Primaris Marines are a relatively new introduction. How well do they fit within the world?
  • Nurgle is not a frequent star of WH40k books. How do his followers change the tone of the story as compared to Khornites?
  • The events of this book are fairly far-reaching. In what ways do you expect to see the world change as a result?
  • If you had to cast this book as a movie, who would be in your dream cast?
  • What burning questions do you have for the sequel?
