Book Club Book #11: Watchers of the Throne: The Emperor’s Legion by Chris Wraight

Every two weeks we read a new book in the WH40k universe and discuss it on our podcast. We invite you to read along with us and join in on our conversation via comments, Twitter, email, or vox cast.

This episode we’re reading Watchers of the Throne: The Emperor’s Legion by Chris Wraight. You can purchase on Amazon, or Black Library, or Audible.

From the back of the book:

The Custodian Guard have stood watch over the Emperor’s Palace on Terra since the foundation of the Imperium. Charged with protecting the Master of Mankind from all threats, within and without, their fearsome resolve is renowned throughout the galaxy, and their golden armour is the last thing that a would-be assassin or saboteur will ever see. Alongside the Null-maidens of the Sisters of Silence, who are anathema to psykers and sorcerers alike, there is no threat to the Golden Throne that they alone cannot vanquish… until now.

  • Did you like the book?
  • Which parts really stood out to you?
  • There is SO much going on here. What surprised you the most? Does the book fill in some gaps?
  • Each of the characters had a very distinct and differing voice and feel. Does it fit both their station and their character?
  • Terra’s politics are, in a word, complex. Does this surprise you? Does this explain the overall state of WH40k’s universe?
  • How do you feel about the Custodes after reading this book? Are they merely hiding from their failures?
  • The Silent Sisters’ absence has always felt peculiar. Does this book adequately explain their lack of presence?
  • It’s awfully convenient that a Silent Sister, bound for Terra, finds a map that lays out Abaddon’s plan, with a low-level cultist, on some isolated world. What do you think is going on here? What happens to the Home Team if they don’t find that map?
